Last Saturday I got to groove to new and legendary hip hop beats at the Paid Dues Festival at the NOS center in good ol’ San Bernardino. The 88 degree weather didn’t stop me from watching Wu-Tang’s early 4 o’clock set. Even though I was uncomfortably sweaty, it was awesome to hear the rest of the Wu-Tang clan pay tribute to the late ODB as they played his hit “Shimmy Shimmy Ya”. Wu-Tang had everyone in the crowd jumping and throwing up the WU sign to hits like “Bring Da Ruckas” and “C.R.E.A.M”. I was hyped!
I also had the pleasure of seeing Boom Camp Clik, Hieroglyphics, Living Legends, Odd Future, and Dipset perform. Living Legends had the best performance hands down. I threw up the “L” as they performed their hits “Never Falling Down” and “She Wants Me.”
I’ve heard stories about Odd Future shows and the craziness that happens, but I was not prepared for what I experienced. Colorful balloons decorated the stage as members of OF grilled hamburgers while performing. Mosh pits were created, people crowd surfed, and drinks were being thrown everywhere. It got a little too intense – I had to watch from the back!
As soon as OF finished their last song, I rushed to the front of the stage to watch Dipset perform. I was most excited about this performance but it ended up being the most disappointing. Although I was hyped that all four members (Cam’ron, Freekey Zekey, Jim Jones, and Juelz Santana) showed up, I could barely hear Cam’s voice. I was so disappointed! But, they did play my favorites “Dipset Anthem” and “Bout It, Bout It.”. Plus, it was pretty rad seeing OF bouncing in the front with the rest of the fans!
In between sets I visited the Active Booth where Luke was chillin’. He was having a good time too!
All in all it was an amazing night of hip hop! If you missed this year’s Paid Dues festival, here are some videos of the shows I saw! Can’t wait ’til next year!!
