The STITCH: European Escapade

After two weeks of traveling around Europe, I’m finally home!  The 12 hour flights and jet lag were definitely worth it, and I couldn’t have asked for a better trip.  I was able to visit family in Germany, travel to Amsterdam, and fall in love in Paris.  The weather wasn’t ideal for summer, but I didn’t mind.  I was in Europe and I was going to make the best of it!

My plane landed in Düsseldorf, Germany and upon arriving I was immediately struck with culture shock. There was of course a language barrier and for once in my life I was traveling without the help of my parents. However, as soon as I exited the terminal I was welcomed by my family and soon my nervousness was put to ease.  After settling in and getting used to the time difference, my family showed us around.

One of the first places they took me to was Cologne to see the magnificent Cologne Cathedral.  This church was not only breathtaking on the outside but even more beautiful inside.

The next day we celebrated my cousin’s wedding.  This wedding party was like no other.  There was an abundance of food, beer, games and music!  The cake arrived at midnight, and the party kept rocking till the early hours of the next morning.  My legs were so sore from all the dancing!

I especially liked our table name card,

The following day we explored Schloss Burg; a reconstructed castle with an amazing view.  It was super interesting to walk around the grounds of the castle and learn about its history.  If you ever get the chance, be sure to try their Bratwurst with mustard.  It’s to die for!

On the way home, we found this lovely sunflower garden along the Rhein River.  I was ecstatic!  Sunflowers are my favorite flower and it was awesome to see millions of them.  B E A U T I F U L!

One thing that I loved about Europe is that it’s huge on public transportation!  If you’d like, you can take the train to any city in any European country with ease.  And that’s exactly what we did!  We packed our backpacks with our clothes, passports and train tickets.  Soon we were on our way!

After riding on the train for 4 hours I was in Germany’s capital and largest city, Berlin.  Berlin’s streets were bustling with people, bikes and little cars.  I decided to live like a Berliner and rent a bicycle as my mode of transportation.

In one day I was able to see The Reichtag, Brandenburg Gate, the Holocaust Memorial, Unter der Linden Strasse, and the Tiergarten. Here are some pictures of my Berlin day!

After one night on the train, we found ourselves in the heart of Munich.  Which is the home of Oktoberfest, and the cute little heart shaped cookies, lebkuchen.  I rented another bike and roamed the streets.  I relaxed in the famous Englischer Garten, and rode a boat in its huge lake.  Munich’s Rathaus was busy with tourists and I even found myself in Munich’s famous beer house Hofbrauhaus.  &yes, I finished that beer haha!

A couple of days later we flew to Paris, France.  This beautiful city was exactly how I imagined.  Full of astonishing buildings, sights, romance.  I know that may seem cliche, but as soon as I stepped out of the plane I fell in love with the city.  We bought a map and a two-day train pass and we were off on an adventure!

We toured the city by foot and used a map to get around.  We visited Notre Dame, The Louvre, the Arc de Triomphe, the Seine River, Place du Carrousel, and of course the Eiffel Tower!  Although we saw so much, there was yet more to see! I’ll definitely be back!

Our trip was slowly coming to an end.  So we decided to take a last minute train ride to Amsterdam.  This party atmosphere city definitely lived up to its expectations with its infamous Red Light District and coffee shops. Amsterdam was a great way to leave Europe with a bang!

This trip was such a blessing and a wonderful experience. If you are thinking about visiting Europe, you should stop thinking about it and just do it!  I will never forget about my time over there, and you best believe I’m saving up for next year’s escapade!

Till then!
