FYF Fest 2011

Last week was the 3rd annual FYF Fest held in Downtown Los Angeles’s State Historic Park. The one day music festival brought heavy hitters like The Descendents, Death From Above 1979, Broken Social Scene, Cass McCombs, Girls, and No Age. The lively Saturday was put on by Altamont and the team was sure to deliver. Great music, food trucks and an eclectique group of booths allowed for a fun Saturday in downtown! Besides the music, I had a great time wandering around checking out the stores and brands that came out to show off their best stuff. Altamont, Amoeba Music, and vintage thrift brands from the LA area set up tents to show off their goods to festival goers. If you missed FYF this year, be sure to check it out next year. Thanks to FYF and Altamont for a great time!!

The STITCH: Stacks of Wax – Bargain Vintage Records

A couple of months ago I stumbled upon a great old record player at a vintage/used record store by my house. My boyfriend had some old wooden speakers and a receiver and I was in business! Since then I have been on the lookout for old records, and great deals. Some of my best scores have been: the “Easy Rider” soundtrack for $3, the best of The Animals for $5, and Elvis Presley’s Greatest Hits for $2! The sound and quality you get from a record player can not beat, and the raw crackling effect gives you a feel of what the song really sounded like when it was first recorded. My recommendation is, go get a record player, find some of your most favorite hits and you will be in love too!!

My top six
1. Pink Floyd:The Dark Side of the Moon
2. Led Zeppelin: Led Zeppelin II
3. The Animals: The Best of Eric Burdon & The Animals
4. The Rolling Stones: Let It Bleed
5. Fleetwood Mac: Rumors
6. Elton John: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

The STITCH: Cayucos Thrifting

A couple of weeks ago I took a trip up the coast to a small beach town called Cayucos. I stumbled upon some of the most amazing thrift stores I have ever seen, with nick-nacks and antiques and collectables that blew my mind! It also happened to be the fourth of July so the American bled city had red, white, and blue on every street corner. My recommendation is, if you are looking for some good thrifting and a great little beach town with lots of character head up north to Cayucos, CA.

Nike SB, Skate Mental, and you…

Everybody knows that Nike has one of the best skateboarding teams around with names like Eric Koston, Paul Rodriguez, Gino Iannucci, Theotis Beasley, and Lance Mountain. What some people might not know is that one of Nike’s original riders is Reese Forbes. Well, Reese Forbes also rides for one of the sickest companies out right now…Skate Mental. They have some of the best graphics that have ever been printed on a skateboard, like the Skate Mental Alien vs. Predator deck with E.T. and Michael Jackson, or the Matt Beach Mrs. T deck. So what do Nike and Skate Mental have in common besides Reese Forbes? They have come out with a Nike X Skate Mental line of Tee’s, Jackets, and Backpacks. Don’t sleep on it!! Scope them out NOW!

LA PARK SHARK 2009

LA Park Shark was a huge success. Each stop was blasted with huge crowds, from moms and pops, bikers to scooter-ers, and just plain and simple the fans of skateboarding. Amazing Skateboarders with  amazing skateboarding skills, throwing down tricks after tricks. At each park through-out Los Angeles, Jarritos’ thundersticks smacking, ice cold Jarritos fruit drinks hydrating all the skaters, and of course with the amazing Corey Cady also known as Frijoles Blancos on the mic

Each park was hand picked based upon being out at these parks, seeing what potential was out there and of course from previous events that were held at these parks. Among all the amazing skateparks in Los Angeles County; Cerritos, West Covina, East LA Belvedere, Long Beach Houghton, Pomona , and Garvanza in Highland Park made the list for Active to hit up. All these parks showed hearts filled of passion. That is what is most important as fellow skateboarder Lizard King says, “Put the passion in the air and let it loose!”

LA Park Shark ended with a bang this past weekend at Garvanza Skatepark. Top three skaters from each stop of the tour advanced to Garvanza Skatepark to battle it out for the finals to victor what LA park has what it takes to be crown the finest. Making it to the finals Long Beach, Claremont(previous known as Pomona) and Garvanza’s very own at it’s home park. As the cream always rises to top Claremont takes first, followed by Long Beach and  last but not least making it at third Garvanza.

A big thanks to Jarritos for making this tour possible. We look forward to hold down more Park Shark making our way into I.E. and OC and see what skateboarding talent is out there to be to be reconized.

Red Bull Manny Mania Am Series 2009

Red Bull threw down $25,000 for an invite only Am manual contest. Blancos was stoked to be hosting along with Casey from Fuel’s Capt N and Casey Show. The top TM’s in the industry drew the names, so we’re looking at the best up and coming skaters in the world and the competition was vicious.

Bryant Chapo cam up victorious and walked away with 5 G’s! Del the Funky Homosapien and Bookoo 1 got down on the MC tip for the beautiful Long Beach crowd. Best part was Joey Brezinski playing the roll of referee, calling kids out on toe drags and lack luster performances. He spit out some timeless classics. Hats off to Greenberg @ Red Bull for putting on an amazing contest!

Toms Shoes Party for the Chief Shoegiver

The One For One business leader, Toms Shoes threw down a spiffy party @ the Viceroy Hotel in Santa Monica for the founder Blake Mycoskie’s Birthday. Husband’s and Boyfriend’s needed to lock up their better halves for this shindig, cuz once they lay eyes on Blake it’s over with. I’m serious, this dude is way better looking than he should be and he’s got hella charm. I think he’s a devil! Kidding of course! No, the dude is so sick because he uses his abilities to hook up little kids around the world with shoes.

Some celebs were in the house to help celebrate. Cheech Marin was customizing shoes and Elijah Wood was on the DJ tip. Couple other famous faces, but I couldn’t place their name. Big thanks to the Toms crew for having Active there. Happy Birthday Blake!!

Sea No Evil Art Show 2009

An art benefit including some amazing people/ artists. We went last year and it was the place to be! Our good friend Deph will be throwing up some art for sale, along with heavies like Shepard Fairey, Michael Sieben (of Bueno fame), Craola, and Logan Hicks who just finished doing a bunch of rad stuff for XGames 15. Shepard will be on the ones and twos mixing up a set for dancing hipsters/dirty skaters. I’m really excited about the special live musical performance. Last year it was Matt Costa, so I imagine it’s someone even bigger, for fear of jam packing the historic building where the show is held, the organinzers are keeping it a surprise! Don’t want to miss out… take advantage of meeting these amazing artist and discovering all the new ones. Life is wonderful and it’s the artist that make it so!!
